Badgers football schedule released: season begins September 4

On Wednesday morning, the Big Ten Conference released its revised 2020 football schedule, and the Wisconsin Badgers will start as scheduled against Indiana on September 4.

Wisconsin will then play at Northwestern and Nebraska in weeks 2 and 3, followed by a home game against Minnesota in week 4 to round out September.

The Badgers will play at Maryland October 3 for week 5 before playing home against Purdue in week 6. Wisconsin then has its bye in Week 7, October 17.

The importance of the bye is that they share the bye with the teams they will see in weeks 2 and 3 in the event the first month of the season is canceled. That would allow the Badgers the ability to make up one game should the season get delayed to October.

Wisconsin plays Illinois October 24 and at Michigan October 31, before their second bye week on November 7. The second bye week is again shared with several members of the Big Ten West to make up any cancelled games from September.

The Badgers wrap up the season at Iowa on November 14 and at home against Rutgers November 21. The week of November 28 is left open for potential make-up games, and December 5 remains the week of the Big Ten Championship Game.

  • The plan is for Big Ten institutions to play a 10-game Conference-only schedule including the nine current opponents and one additional cross-division game
  • The schedule starts as early as the weekend of Sept. 5 with final games slated for Nov. 21 to align with academic calendars
  • The 10 games would be played over at least 12 weeks with each team having two open dates
  • The schedule is structured to maximize flexibility:
    • Games can be collapsed into bye weeks
    • Uniform bye week on Nov. 28
    • Cross-division games are currently scheduled for all schools in Week 1 (Sept. 5) and Week 12 (Nov. 21)
    • Schedule constructed in a way that allows season to start as early as the weekend of Sept. 5, but also provides the ability to move the start of the season back to Sept. 12, 19 or 26 through strategic sequencing that allows games to be moved to a latter part of the schedule
  • Big Ten Football Championship Game remains scheduled for Dec. 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, though it could be moved as late as Dec. 19
  • Teams can begin preseason practices on Friday, Aug. 7, or earlier if permitted under NCAA guidelines related to first dates of scheduled competition
