Packers Completely Outplayed In Embarrassing 38-3 Loss To Saints

To say that was the worst loss of the Aaron Rodgers era would be both correct and somehow an understatement. The Green Bay Packers were thoroughly embarrassed on Sunday, losing the season opener to the New Orleans Saints 38-3.

The Packers defense held New Orleans to a field goal on the first drive, which was the closest thing to a positive that could be found in the early going. In the first half, Green Bay had just three possessions, the first two ending in punts, and the final possession ending just before the half as Mason Crosby kicked a 39 yard field goal.

The Saints went into halftime with a 17-3 lead over the Packers.

Green Bay started the second half with the ball and were driving down the field, looking to climb back into the game and get some positive momentum, when Rodgers threw his first red zone interception in nearly two years. His pass was behind Davante Adams and Paulson Adebo snagged it instead.

On the Packers next possession, Rodgers tried for a deep pass down the middle that overshot his intended target of Marquez Valdes-Scantling and ended in the arms of Marcus Williams, who ran the ball all the way back to the Green Bay 12 yard line.

The game was clearly slipping away from the Packers, who badly needed a boost. They thought they had it at the end of the third quarter when Darnell Savage intercepted a pass from Saints QB Jameis Winston in the endzone and ran it back to the 31 yard line. But that momentum was stopped by a controversial "Roughing the Passer" penalty on Za'Darius Smith on the play.

The wind was completely knocked out of the Packers sails and two plays later, the Saints found the endzone to take a 31-3 lead.

Aaron Rodgers finished his day, completing 15 of 28 passes for just 133 yards and two interceptions. Jordan Love played most of the fourth quarter and looked decent, completing 5 of 7 pass attempts for 68 yards.

Jameis Winston threw 5 touchdown passes but completed just 14 passes overall on 20 attempts for 148 yards.

The Packers play next on Monday night against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.
