Packers lose a must-win game?

Sunday was seen as the Green Bay Packers “get right” game. Instead, just about everything that could go wrong, did.

“Obviously extremely disappointed right now,” coach Matt LaFleur opened his postgame news conference with. “Too many mistakes. Turnovers, obviously not scoring the first two times in the red zone, and then penalties at really inopportune times.”

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers put it more bluntly, admitting that “I played sh---y” in his postgame remarks to reporters.

Rodgers (23-43, 291 yds, 1 TD, 3 INT, 53.5 QBR) was seen expressing his frustration throughout the game, particularly after his pair of red zone interceptions that quashed two potential scoring drives.

“Can’t lose a game like that against that team,” Rodgers continued. “Yeah, had some sh---y throws, for sure.” For the first time since Rodgers became starting quarterback in 2008, the Packers have lost five games in a row.

On Green Bay’s first possession, Rodgers tried to hit Allan Lazard in the end zone, but the ball deflected off the facemask of Detroit’s Derrick Barnes, floating into the hands of teammate Kerby Joseph.

On the Packers next possession, the offense had the ball on the Detroit 1-yard line. On first down, A.J. Dillon was stuffed short of the goal line for no gain. On second down, Rodgers and Sammy Watkins were not on the same page, resulting in an incomplete pass. On third down, Dillon again was stuffed at the line of scrimmage.

And then on fourth down, Rodgers tried to hit David Bakhtiari, who had reported as an eligible receiver, on a rolling play to the right. Rodgers underthrew Bakhtiari, allowing rookie Aidan Hutchinson to intercept the ball in the end zone, resulting in a touchback but more importantly, thwarting another Green Bay drive.

“We’ve got eight games left, and we’ve got…the (6-2) Dallas Cowboys coming into Lambeau,” LaFleur said when asked where the team goes from here. “We’ve got to get back to work and come up with a better plan to put our guys in a better position and go out and battle in Lambeau.”

Of course, returning to Green Bay will be former coach Mike McCarthy, who was fired the last time he was on the Lambeau sidelines, following a listless 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals almost four years ago.

Injuries played a part in Green Bay’s defeat and likely will be a major part of their story for the rest if the 2022 season as well. Seen in the locker room wearing walking boots were running back Aaron Jones, wide receiver Romeo Doubs, cornerback Eric Stokes, and linebacker Rashan Gary.
